What can you do to combat gum disease?

fighting gum disease and periodontitis

Periodontal cleanings and nutrition strategies can prevent periodontitis

There is more to dental health than brushing and flossing your teeth, although those are great places to start. Gum disease comprises a significant portion of the oral health issues we treat at Janssen Dental Clinic, and our team works diligently to help patients slow or reverse this potentially serious issue.

Nothing is more effective in fighting gum disease than regular flossing. This easily performed dental self-care task does more to remove plaque along the gum line and minimize bacteria buildup than brushing alone. This is important because bacteria can multiply and lead to gingivitis, which is the early stage of gum disease.

Red and swollen gums are the typical signs of early gum disease. Your gums may even bleed when you brush or floss. On the bright side, you can reverse the progression of gum disease at this point as long as the bone and fibers that hold your teeth in place are still in good shape.

Our dental hygienists often perform what we call hygiene chair periodontal treatments when you come in for your regular cleanings. These treatments take aim at plaque that is visible above the gum line. We also may offer advice on supplements you can take such as vitamins D3 and K-2, which studies show can help your body maintain strong teeth and bones.

What happens as gum disease progresses?

The next stage of gum disease is known as periodontitis. This is much more serious and features irreversible damage to the bone and fibers that hold your teeth in place. We measure the pockets that develop in the spaces between your teeth and gums to determine the damage that trapped plaque and bacteria are causing.

Dr. Craig Janssen considers pockets 4 mm deep or greater as an indication of periodontal disease. He may recommend we perform periodontal cleanings beneath the gum line every few months in an attempt to stem the tide of advancing gum disease. Severe cases may require specialized procedures such as LANAP® laser treatments or even bone grafts.

Call our office to schedule an appointment for your gum health assessment. Your teeth will thank you.
