Help students keep dental care in mind with these simple tips

good dental habits for your kids

Engraining good habits now carries kids through the school year

As summer draws to a close, it is time for parents and students to gear up for the new academic year in more ways than one. Re-establishing healthy dental habits amidst the excitement of new classes or moving to a different school contributes to a confident smile and overall well-being.

Dr. Craig Janssen and the Janssen Dental Clinic team are ready to supplement your daily dental habits with regular cleanings and appropriate procedures to keep teeth and gums healthy for every member of your family. Here are some essential dental care reminders as we head into fall:

Brushing and flossing habits

Following a regular brushing and flossing schedule at home fits in nicely with the routine of a school schedule. Have your kids brush every morning, and again after the last meal of the day along with flossing. Flossing helps remove food particles and plaque from between teeth where toothbrushes can’t reach. Consider investing in a water flossing device if your kids rebel against using string floss.

Choosing the right dental products

Younger kids might enjoy using colorful toothbrushes to make brushing their teeth more fun. You might even want to have a variety of colors on hand so the conversation becomes, “Which color toothbrush do you want to use today?” rather than simply telling them to brush their teeth. Remind kids who are more self-sufficient to use electric toothbrushes or braces-friendly flossers as appropriate.

A balanced diet for dental health

It’s okay to have the occasional junk food, but limiting sugary and acidic foods helps prevent cavities and enamel erosion. A balanced diet plays an important role in dental care as well as contributing to better overall health. Encourage your kids to drink plenty of water at school instead of soda, sports drinks and other sugary beverages, and get them in the habit of eating healthy fruits, vegetables and lean proteins.

Pack a dental care kit

Heading off to college for the first time can be a stressful experience. A good way to minimize some of that anxiety is by having familiar items within reach. A dental care kit can include a toothbrush and toothpaste, dental floss, mouthwash, and even a small mirror. A kit like this can help them maintain their oral hygiene amidst the chaos of a new living environment and a busy college schedule.

Lead by example

As parents, you can lead by example in reinforcing good dental habits. Demonstrate proper brushing and flossing techniques to your younger children, maintain your regular dental appointments, and make dental care a family priority. Reinforcing good oral hygiene habits on a daily basis will equip your kids to enjoy bright smiles, good overall health, and a positive attitude toward dental care.

Schedule a dental checkup

Regular dental visits help us identify and address any potential issues early and prevent them from becoming more significant later on. Dr. Craig recommends a thorough cleaning by our team very six months to check for cavities, assess the need for braces, and provide personalized dental care advice. If you or your kids are not already on our schedule, this is a good time to call before the craziness of the school year takes over.
