Follow these tips to protect your teeth during the holiday season

protect your teeth this holiday season

You can enjoy some treats while still being a good boy or girl

It is easy to let your guard down when it comes to dental health while indulging in holiday festivities. The Janssen Dental Clinic team understands this challenge. That’s why we have put together this comprehensive collection of tips to help you navigate the holiday social season while keeping your teeth health and bright.

Moderation is the key – It’s okay to indulge in your favorite treats up to a point during the holidays, but keep in mind that sugar is a feast for the bacteria in your mouth and can lead to tooth decay. Try to choose treats that are less sticky or dissolve quickly. Sorry, but caramels and peanut brittle can cling to your teeth and increase your risk.

Rather than skipping your favorites entirely, focus on portion control. A small piece of fudge is better than a big slice of pecan pie with whipped cream on top. Also, have your treats with meals rather than as standalone snacks. Other foods will encourage your mouth to produce the saliva that can neutralize acids and carry away food particles.

It’s Wisconsin … head for the cheese plate! Cheese is beneficial for your teeth as well as being delicious. Dairy products are high in calcium and phosphate, which can help your body rebuild tooth enamel and neutralize harmful acids. Of all the treats available during the holidays, cheese ranks as one of the best when it comes to your teeth.

Don’t forget to drink lots of water – Drinking plenty of water checks off several boxes in a healthy holiday season. Staying hydrated is always a good idea anyway because your body uses water as a key building block. Its ability to rinse away food particles and bacteria, and clean your mouth after you drink staining drinks such as red wine and coffee, elevates water to the must-have level.

Stick to your regular dental routine – It’s easy to blow off your regular nightly oral health routine during the late-night gatherings and travel that are common during the holidays. However, brushing and flossing are more important than ever to remove the day’s buildup of plaque and food particles. Remember to pack a travel kit or overnight bag when appropriate.

Mix water in between alcoholic beverages – Keep a glass of water handy after you toast in the holidays with friends or family. Alcohol can dry out your mouth and leave acids behind.

The veggie tray is an option – The vegetable tray provides a great opportunity to choose a snack that is healthy for your body and your teeth. They are full of vitamins and minerals that promote oral health. Acidic foods such as citrus fruits and tomato-based sauces are not tooth-friendly. Swish some water around in your mouth to help clean out the residue.

Finally, schedule your regular cleaning appointment with our friendly Janssen Dental Clinic staff. We may be able to squeeze you in yet this year before any insurance benefits you have reset. May your holiday season be healthy and safe!
