A biological dentist takes more than your oral health into account

Dr. Craig Janssen focuses on the connection with your whole body

Patients often ask us what it means to be a biological dentist. It can be a confusing term, after all, since our mouths and dental science are biological in nature. The difference comes from the enhanced focus a biological dentist has on the connection between your entire body and oral health.

The importance of the mouth-body connection is not new to dentistry or traditional medicine, since it has long been known that inflammatory conditions such as gum disease can spill over into other chronic diseases. However, the willingness of some dentists to officially embrace this connection in a comprehensive philosophy of care is a relatively recent transition.

Dr. Craig and our office manager, Mary, have taken their commitment to biological dentistry to a higher level than most by completing a two-year program with the American College of Integrative Medicine and Dentistry’s School of Integrative Biologic Dental Medicine. Dr. Craig is now a Board Certified Naturopathic Physician upon earning certification in Integrative Biologic Dental Medicine, while Mary is a Board Certified Holistic Practitioner with her certification as an Integrative Biologic Dental Assistant.

Biological dentists promote healing through overall health

The Janssen Dental Clinic team encourages optimal health for our patients throughout our care model. This begins with understanding your overall health status and giving you the information you need to prevent problems from occurring. We believe you are more likely to make healthy choices when you understand the benefits of those choices.

Our focus on disease prevention does not end with your mouth. For example, we know stress can have multiple negative effects on the body. While stress may not be as obviously impactful on your mouth as a cavity, it can lead to teeth grinding as an oral health concern, as well as other issues such as high blood pressure and poor quality of sleep.

Dr. Craig’s use of biocompatible materials in filling cavities is another example of his biological dentistry philosophy. He uses a composite resin material rather than amalgam for new and repaired fillings. Our team uses the Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique (SMART) when appropriate to ensure the safety of patients as well as our care team.

Contact us with any questions you have about biological dentistry and how this philosophy of care can enhance overall health for you and your family.
